Purpose
-------

Transient is a utility which provides a temporary directory on your hard
disk, creating a new sub directory every day to help you organise files.

You can use it like a RAM disk - drag files to it, save files to it - but
the files will remain on the hard disk until you delete them.

Licence
-------

Transient is distributed with a rather unusual licence - it is not FreeWare,
but GiftWare. The program may be distributed freely, but if you want to use
it regularly, you _must_ send me a "gift" of some sort.

Acceptable gifts include money (of a non-specific amount), postcards, CDs,
fresh fruit, Pop Tarts and general confectionary. Basically, anything you
want to send me that isn't unpleasant (a dead skunk will _not_ get you a
registration).

Once you've sent me a gift you are entitled to bug fixes and you can suggest
new features.

Using Transient
---------------

To load Transient, double-click on the icon in the filer window. You should
put a reference to Transient into yout Boot sequence if you are going to use
it regularly.

You can drag files from other disks to Transient's icon or to the window
it opens, or save files from other applications directly on to the icon to
move them into the directory.

The iconbar icon displays today's date in a configurable format. Click
Menu on the iconbar icon to open the main menu.

Choices
-------

There are a number of options for Transient's use:

Date:
-----
"Directory name" is the format of the name of the directory created each day.
"Iconbar icon" is the format of the date under the iconbar icon.

You can alter these by clicking on the right arrow next to the Format display
and choosing one from the menu. An example of the date is displayed below.

If you have any date formats that you would like to use instead of these
defaults, please contact us and we will try to implement them.

Auto-expiry:
------------
This option allows you to automatically delete directories which are of
 a set age in days.

  Time:
  -----
Use the arrows to alter the minimum age of the directories which should be
   deleted.
  Delay:
  ------
Use the arrows to alter time inbetween expiries in days.

NOTE: once directories have been deleted, the data inside them cannot be
 retrieved without external help.

Open directory on drag:
-----------------------
With this option set the current window will be opened when a file is dragged
 to it.

Location of temporary directory:
--------------------------------
This is the position of your temporary directory, defaulting to $.Temporary.
