Title: Discottery Short: Create self-extracting archives (v3.00) ShortName: discott.arc Author: Phil Norman (P.C.F.Norman@exeter.ac.uk) Date: 10-feb-96 Status: Freeware Archiver: SparkFS Size: ================================= Description: !Dicottery is an application written by me (though not quite finished), which produces a BASIC file from any application or directory. When you run this BASIC file, it will produce an exact copy of the original app or dir in the current directory. The BASIC file is compressed, and so this results in a way of distributing your software that is easy and quick to produce, and also easy and quick to decompress once the end user has it. To produce the compressed BASIC prog, simply drag an application or dir onto the icon bar icon, and drag the BASIC file off. To decompress, simply double-click on the BASIC prog. To give you an idea of speed, I tried Dicottery and !ArcFS out with !Zap. Dicottery took 22 seconds to compress it, and it took 53s for the BASIC prog to produce the final prog. ArcFS took 135s to compress, and 37 to decompress. Also, ArcFS costs about £25, while Dicottery is free!
